Notice of a Data Security Incident:
United Medical Centers (“UMC”) is committed to protecting the security and privacy of our patients’ information. On October 27, 2023, we began mailing notification letters to patients whose information may have been involved in a security incident that disrupted the operations of some of our IT systems.
On September 2, 2023, our ongoing investigation determined that this disruption may have involved certain patient information. We began our investigation on or around July 26, 2023, after we learned of suspicious activity in our systems. Upon identifying the activity, we immediately took steps to secure our systems, launched an investigation with the assistance of a third-party forensic investigator, and notified law enforcement. The investigation determined that an unauthorized party accessed or removed some files from some of our systems. Upon review and analysis of those files, we determined they may have contained some or all of the following information: names, dates of birth, mailing addresses, Social Security numbers, diagnosis and treatment information, and/or health insurance information.
We take this incident very seriously and sincerely regret any concern this may cause. For patients whose information may have been involved in the incident, we recommend that they review their financial statements for any unauthorized activity and immediately report any unauthorized activity to their financial institution. We recommend that they also review the statements they receive from their healthcare providers and health insurers and immediately contact the provider or insurer that issued the statement if they see services that they did not receive.
To help prevent something like this from happening again, we have implemented additional safeguards and measures to further protect and monitor our systems, including additional training and various technical enhancements to our network monitoring and capabilities.
