JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the WIC Director coordinates, plans, and performs the clinical process and needs of WIC clients. Responsible for assigning responsibilities to unlicensed personnel as per the competency assessment protocols. Responsible for providing nutrition education/breastfeeding promotions to WIC participants and making appropriate referrals as necessary. Responsible for demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Must be able to identify and categorize each patient’s age-specific groups of needs, such as those for 0-59 years old. Assists in the provisions of health education, breastfeeding, and disease prevention services in the community as needed and/or required. Responsible for compliance with other requirements affecting the Medical Center, such as State/Federal regulations, TJC standards, HRSA, DSHS, and Compliance Performance Standards requirements.

EDUCATION

High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited school of vocational nursing with a current license to practice as a vocational nurse in the State of Texas

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

  1. Must have current CPR certification
  2. Computer experience required.
  3. Prior experience in patient education is preferred.
  4. Clerical experience preferred.

SPECIFIC DEMANDS

Bilingual (English/Spanish) required. Ability to communicate proficiently with individuals of diverse backgrounds and economic levels.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. Ability to observe the general physical condition of patients to detect signs of abnormalities.
  2. Ability to record observations completely, accurately, legible, and concisely.
  3. Manual dexterity.
  4. Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
  5. Ability to stoop, lift, and move moderate weight

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. May be exposed to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, and respiratory hazards. (OSHA Bloodborne Category I)
  2. Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants.
